How many times have you found yourself looking at your life from that proverbial “out of body” perspective? You can see yourself in so many ways; spouse, partner, parent, child, neighbor, coworker, friend. Many of those relationships are part of the foundation of your every day life. The people we share our lives with are valuable and important. Do those relationships start to define who you are? You are “living” every day for your spouse or for your child so much so that you begin to question “who am I?”
John writes, in chapter 4, about an encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. This encounter was not by coincidence. Everything God does is intentional in His design, His timing, and His purpose. Jesus knew she would be coming to that well at that time; one to avoid being seen by the other women in town. In their discussion, Jesus reveals that He knows about her past and her current relationship. In doing so, He offers her something far greater to satisfy her. In asking for a drink of water, “Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”” ~John 4:10 NIV. He adds, “Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”” ~John 4:13-14 NIV.
The truth is that God knows who we are. He sees us, He knows our hearts, He sees our sin, and with all of it, He loves us and wants a relationship with us! We may be many things. We may strive for satisfaction (attention, money, status or possessions) in life from sources that are temporary and meaningless. When we wipe everything away, the only thing we need is Jesus; the true Living Water.
John tells us, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” ~1 John 3:1 NIV.
So when you have questions or doubts about who you are, remember that you are a child of God! Focus on Jesus and always know who you are and who you belong to!
Peace & Blessings!
