The history of King David, ruler of Israel, feels like a rags-to-riches-to-rags-to-riches story. Sounds complex, right? It was, but whose walk through life is an easy straight line! David, son of Jesse, served his family as a shepherd. Simple life; however, it was Important work. Then, being led by God’s direction, goes out to the battlefield against the Philistines and kills the giant, Goliath. Meanwhile, God tells the prophet Samuel to find the “chosen” one to replace King Saul. Rags to Riches, right?!
Well, the “riches” of being king can be fleeting. David, in a moment of selfishness and greed, made a terrible choice; one not without severe consequences. David coveted Bathsheba, the wife of a Hittite soldier named Uriah. David decided to have Uriah ordered to the front lines of the battle, the most intense, where in fact he was killed. All this, why?
In 2 Samuel, we read, “I gave your master’s house to you, and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’”
2 Samuel 12:8-10 NIV
David, as a shepherd (rags) was anointed King of Israel (riches) and was showered with blessings from God. When he ordered the murder of Uriah, he paid the price with the life of the son born to him by Bathsheba (rags). In God’s infinite love and grace, David and Bathsheba had another son, Solomon, who became regarded as the wisest king. It was Solomon who oversaw the building of the temple (riches)!
What was David’s failure? He simply did not trust God. Psalms 37 states, “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.” Psalms 37:23-24 NIV.
Although our lives may be filled with complexities, when we Focus on Jesus, we can trust that our walk will safe, firmly planted on solid ground. It is because of The Father’s provision that any failures we face will be lessons for our greater good!
Peace & Blessings!
